Triangulation Peak view of Mount Jefferson

avatar
@jesseroos
This scenic peak has some of the best views of Mount Jefferson anywhere in the state of Oregon. At the summit, you'll literally feel like you're standing right next to the mountain. Not only that, but there are vast rolling hills that seem to go on forever and several great views of other peaks, too.

This shot was taken atop the summit of Triangulation Peak with a view of Mount Jefferson. To reach the peak, follow your driving directions along several logging roads, until you reach a well-marked trailhead. Once there, be sure to fill out a free self-issue wilderness permit before hitting the trail. The hike meanders gently rolling terrain to the east for about 1.5 miles before starting to climb steeper switchbacks up the peak's northwest slope. Look to the north for a great view of Spire Rock at the first switchback, a unique basalt formation that juts into the sky. Once you've reach the summit plateau, there's an unmarked trail junction. Boca Cave trail is to the left at the junction. To reach Triangulation Peak, take the trail to the right as it curves around to a clear view of Mount Jefferson and other Cascades. Continue on to the summit. At the top, there once stood a wildfire lookout from 1933-1967, however there's no evidence of it remaining. Have a snack, enjoy the views, and absorb one of the finest wilderness areas in the country! Trailhead Coordinates: 44.721503, -121.948767 Trail Length: 5 miles Elevation Gain: 1,031 ft Driving Directions: The trailhead for this hike is off of McCoy Creek Road, about one mile east of Idanha on Highway 22. Most mobile navigation systems will have no problem mapping you to the trailhead, but make sure to download the directions before you leave. Service can be spotty in Mt. Jefferson Wilderness.
