Coming from nearby city of Bishop, you simply stay on CA-168 westward towards the mountains.
After you pass Buttermilk Rd you'll soon see a sign for "Inyo National Forest" on your right, and just several yards in front of that is where I stood. You can safely park your vehicle along Starlite Dr a few hundred feet ahead on your right.
Tips
When to go
Best season
October, November
Best time
Sunrise, Morning
The beauty of the Sierras isn't limited to a particular month or time of year, but if I had to choose I'd say fall takes the cake. You can't beat the fall palette of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows that sweep across the range.
Rise and shine, you'll need the rising sun from the east to light the mountains you'll be facing to the west.
Field tips
Please exercise caution while photographing in the middle of the road - make sure there are no cars coming from either direction.
I used a 70-200mm zoom lens to magnify the distant mountains.
I composed this shot in Live View and used the in-camera leveler to ensure I was level with the horizon.
