When to go
Best season
October, November
While there is something to be said for every month at Convict Lake, I believe the fall months are the best months due to the vibrant color of the aspens. Depending on how early winter hits, you can expect to get fall colors the months of October & November.
The position of Laurel Mountain (the multicolored rock peak commanding your attention) makes it so the peak only receives light at sunrise and not at sunset. To get the Alpenglow on the peak, you will need to be there for sunrise. This is good, because sunrise is generally when the lake is calmest, meaning you will get the best reflection.
Field tips
Be aware of the water. Also, in winter the rocks on shore can be very icy.
Bring a wide-angle lens (35mm or less). I had a 24-70mm lens and shot the featured photo at 24mm (with a full frame camera). Any tighter and you risk cutting off the peak.
Try getting as close to the water as possible for an amazing, equal reflection.
If the water is not completely calm, try a longer exposure time to smooth out the reflection some.

Do nearby
After shooting, you can hike all the way around the lake (be careful if there is snow). The trail is a 3-mile loop you can start in either direction. Also, make sure to check out the signs near the parking area. Convict Lake is named Convict Lake for a reason, and it is an interesting historic one!
You can also go check out Mammoth Lakes for lodging options and to have a good time in general!
