This location is along the Convict Lake Trail at the opposite side of the lake from the parking area and does require a hike (a fairly easy one) to access.
First, make your way on Highway 395 to Convict Lake Road approximately 10 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and across the highway from the Mammoth / Yosemite Airport. Head southwest on Convict Lake Road toward the mountains. At about 2.7 miles you will come upon Convict Lake. There will be a parking area on the right and the road will continue left to a bridge crossing over the outlet of Convict Lake. Head across the bridge and continue on the road for another 0.1 miles to a loop parking lot and park there.
This is where one end of the Convict Lake Loop begins and is the parking lot closest to the aspen grove where the featured photo was captured. From this lot you will hike along the Convict Lake Trail for approximately 0.7 miles before coming to a boardwalk meandering through the aspen grove. Here is your spot!
You can continue all the way around the lake and back to your car (it is about a 3 mile loop) or just head back the way you came.
