At the summit of this short but challenging hike, stand triumphant over a rocky outcropping and take in the sweeping panoramic view of beautiful Crescent Lake — a dizzying 2,400 feet below you.

How to get there

This photo was taken at the summit of Mount Storm King, facing west toward the sunset with gorgeous Lake Crescent below. The summit area isn't large and you'll easily find the protruding rock my model was standing on. Trailhead Coordinates: 48.0582, -123.7892 Trail Length: Approximately 4.0 miles Elevation Gain: 2065 ft. To get here, you'll need to start near the parking lot of the Storm King Ranger Station, near the southeast side of Lake Crescent. From the parking lot, take the wide trail for Marymere Falls that passes in front of the ranger station. After half a mile, you'll see a large boulder with a sign propped up against it marking the trailhead for the hike. This is your turnoff for Mount Storm King. Right away, the trail climbs quite quickly, with switchbacks weaving through giant pines, madronas, manzanitas, cedars, and hemlocks. Along the trail, there are several viewpoints offering views of both Barnes Creek Valley and the deep blue waters of Lake Crescent. Don't stop there, however, as the real prize awaits you at the top. After approximately 1.3 miles, you'll be able to peer through the trees to the lake beneath you. This is a good time to stop for a quick snack and sip of water if needed. This point marks the end of the maintained trail. If you choose to continue, the trail gradually becomes more and more challenging before culminating at a climber's trail, which is aided by ropes. The climb up this section is not for the faint of heart and should not be attempted in the rain. Furthermore, I would not recommend it for younger kids or those who aren't in good physical condition. Keep in mind that whatever you go up, you must also come down, and the traction is very minimal.
