Msheireb Mosque

This iconic mosque is picturesque in many ways and stands out amongst the other buildings in the downtown area. It's design is modern, yet still true to historical Islamic spaces. The geometric gold details that cover the walls work magic against the white marble surfaces. Make sure to explore the courtyard with a water feature in the middle and don't miss the giant swinging doors that make a great backdrop.

This image of the wall was taken at Msheireb Mosque in Doha. You can either drive, take public transportation or hire a driver to get you to this location. If you're taking public transit, this spot will be equidistant from the Msheireb (Gold, Green or Red line) and Souq Waqif (Gold line) stops. Enter the Msheireb Mosque courtyard from Al Arsheef Al Watani Street through the openings and hang a left through the short hallway with private administration offices/doors. You'll find this frame by turning around and looking back towards the water fountain in the center.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Mid-day
This location is accessible throughout the year, but I recommend avoiding the hot summer months. During the fall and winter the temperature drops, so I recommend traveling to Qatar during this time frame.
For the best light, I recommend going mid-day. The wall of this mosque will create shadows in the early morning and late afternoon, so it might be best to capture when the sun is higher in the sky.

Field tips

Be mindful of others in the mosque and of the security. Only take out your camera when you are ready for your shot.
By using a wide-angle lens (18mm), you'll more easily be able to capture the mosque's tall pillars.
Make sure that your camera is perpendicular to the ground to achieve perfectly vertical lines.
Try centering your subject with the water feature and giant doors behind.

Do nearby

Walk around the downtown area to discover more of Qatar's culture and historical landmarks.
The building behind the Mosque has a unique woven concrete design that makes for great photos.
I also recommend visiting the M7 museum and incredible covered courtyard directly in front of that building that leads to the Mandarin Oriental, Doha.
