Mondrian Doha Hotel Spiral Staircase

avatar
@asenseofhuber
Located in the West Bay Lagoon entertainment and shopping area, the Mondrian Doha is jaw dropping from the moment you pull up to the property. A dramatic white lobby with modern decor will welcome you, filled with unique seating areas, massive lamps and plenty of light from the triangular window design. Then, you'll see the spiral staircase as the centerpiece of the east side of the lobby. This unique staircase leads up to a dead-end at the top, and depending on time of day, the entire space is usually empty and just begging for some camera attention—especially from this angle! 📷: in collaboration with @tommylundberg

This image was taken from the top of the spiral staircase, looking down at the lobby level of the Mondrian Doha hotel. You can take a car or public transportation here. If you're taking public transit, ride on the Red Line until you reach the Legtaifiya stop and then walk north toward the hotel. Enter the lobby of Mondrian Doha and walk toward your left. You'll have to show proof of a Covid app on your phone and then pass through the small radar detector security by the front door. From there, you'll see the spiral staircase as the centerpiece of the massive space with giant vaulted ceilings. At the top of the staircase, reach over the railing (with a secure camera strap) to get centered within the negative space of the spiral shape. Have your model lay centered on the ground level and then start taking your photos. Note: please be polite to hotel staff and keep your camera discreet until the very moment you are about to photograph.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Indoor photography allows for flexibility in terms of seasonality. For this photo of the spiral staircase in the Mondrian Doha, any month works because it's not a weather-permitting shot!
You can achieve this image during any time of the day, but morning light allowed for the lobby floor to be bright white. The lobby is lit, so if you are here after daylight, you'll have no problem taking well-lit images.

Field tips

Please be polite to hotel staff and only pull out your camera the very moment you are about to photograph.
Proceed with caution as you lean over the balcony and make sure you have a secure camera strap so your camera doesn't fall.
It's crucial to climb all the way to the top of the stairs just before the platform in order to emphasize the spiral architecture.
I think it looks best to have your focal point in the center of your shot so your subject is sharp and visible, drawing the eye to the middle of the frame.
A bright colored shirt on your model always pops nicely! Suggest that your model dresses in bright clothing for an even more noticeable subject.

Do nearby

Don't miss out on visiting the pool on the rooftop level near the fitness center. It's insanely beautiful, with some of the most unique tile work I've ever seen! It's definitely a photogenic place to experiment with shapes and textures with more of the triangular-shaped window design.
