Umm Bab Clay Quarry Lonely Trees & Tire

avatar
@parisverra
Umm Bab Clay Quarry is another unexpected off-roading adventure in Qatar. When I was there, our guide told us about an area that his family and he had found while exploring. He insisted I would be able to find some cool things to photograph—and he was right! It's in the middle of nowhere and desolate, with only some strange trees left standing. Grab a friend and start snapping photos of them in the landscape to capture a one-of-a-kind photo.

This image of the model and lonely trees was taken near the Umm Bab Clay Quarry in Al Rayyan, Qatar. To get this perspective, I took this photo a bit further off-roading from the road. You'll pass a few of the "lonely trees" while you're driving before reaching a trio of three (as seen in this shot). Reference the GPS coordinates and keep an eye out for the trees to orient yourself. Unexpectedly, there were tires around when I visited so I decided to incorporate them into the image. I really loved shooting a variety of photos in this area.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Late afternoon
I went to the lonely trees of Umm Bab Clay Quarry during April, but all months are great! My only recommendation would be that if you plan to really enjoy this spot, you might want to avoid the extremely hot summer months.
You can visit this location anytime, but in order to photograph similar lighting conditions, I recommend the late morning or late afternoon when the sun is bright, but not too harsh. Additionally, sunrise and sunset are always beautiful times to visit the quarry.

Field tips

You'll have to drive off of the main road to reach this destination, so having a 4x4 vehicle is a must.
I shot the featured image with a 70mm focal length and I think having a 24-70mm lens will allow you to shoot a wide range of images, both from a wider perspective and a more compressed viewpoint.
Having a human subject will breathe some life into the photo—especially since the desert is so bare.
If you're styling your model, I recommend modest desert attire. The area is very deserted and you want to be protected from the elements.

Do nearby

Since the landscape of this area is quite barren, I recommend staying near the Umm Bab Clay Quarry and experimenting with the different types of compositions you can create.
