These massive, craggy peaks, which once formed part of the border between Austria and Italy, are located on perhaps the most popular hike in the Italian Dolomites. This gentle, six-mile trek offers breathtaking vistas and plenty of alpine caves (like this one!) to explore.

This photo was taken from a cave along the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop. To get here, you'll need a car. Navigate to Parcheggio Tre Cime Lavaredo (46.613229, 12.295698) and park in one of the many parking spots. The hike is a large loop around the three peaks, so you can begin, either by hiking east from Rifugio Auronzo, or hiking the loop beginning from the west side of the parking lots.
This location viewpoint is closer to the Rifugio Auronzo entrance, so I recommend starting there. From the parking lots, walk around Rifugio Auronzo and begin walking with the rest of the crowd along the wide, clearly marked trail. The crowds should thin out along the hike.
Continue along the path, following signage for Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte. Reference the GPS coordinates to find area where I took this photo. There are many caves directly up a small hill from the trail, with amazing views over the Tre Cime — just be careful going up and down, as the loose rock can be slippery!
