This photo of Rifugio A. Locatelli, also known as Dreizinnenhütte in German, was taken along the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop hike.
To get here, you'll need a car. Navigate to Parcheggio Tre Cime Lavaredo (46.613229, 12.295698) and park in one of the many parking spots. The hike is a large loop around the three peaks, so you can begin, either by hiking east from Rifugio Auronzo, or hiking the loop beginning from the west side of the parking lots.
From the parking lot, walk around Rifugio Auronzo and begin walking with the rest of the crowd along the wide, clearly marked trail (#101). The crowds should thin out along the hike.
Continue along the path, following signage for Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte. Once you've reached the rifugio, walk around the back and follow the trail uphill toward Chiesetta Alpina. Walk past the little church, towards the large rock formation. Reference the GPS coordinates to find the area where I took this photo. Position yourself on higher ground, then turn around and point your camera back towards the rifugio and Monte Paterno — just be careful going up and down, as the loose rock can be slippery!
From Rifugio Auronzo to Rifugio A. Locatelli, it is about an hour and 20-minute hike.
