Less than an hour away from San Francisco, Trojan Point offers a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean and winding road. Stand at the edge of the world while watching the afternoon light kiss the green rolling hills of Mount Tamalpais as the setting sun dips below the horizon.

How to get there

This image was taken from a trail overlooking Trojan Point, a couple of feet away from the parking lot, with a view of Mount Tamalpais. To get to this perspective, follow Highway 1 north, towards Muir Beach. Upon reaching the intersection, turn right onto Panoramic Highway. Follow the road for about 15 minutes until reaching Pantoll Road. Take a final right at the intersection onto Pantoll Road and the parking lot of Trojan Point should be on the right. From the parking lot (37.906233, -122.614647), cautiously walk across the road toward a trail entrance marked by a group of wooden fences. Make your way to the trail on the right (far right of the wooden fences), as the higher-up perspective creates more balance within the composition. Lastly, head up about 50 feet to reach this perspective.

Tips

When to go

Best season

March, April, May

Best time

Late afternoon, Sunset
Trojan Point can be photographed year round; however, only during the late winter and spring will the grass appear green.
In the late afternoon, the sun will cast a yellow-orangish hue across the meadows of Mount Tamalpais. These lighting conditions will create a dreamlike element to your shot.

Field tips

Be careful when climbing up the trail. The incline may be a bit steep and rocky at some points, so make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes.
Have a model run out onto the dirt pull-out for a sense of scale and adventure. Against the scenery, the model will appear small and you'll be able to tell how massive the landscape really is.
When framing the composition, use the rules of third as a helping hand. For reference, I had the model directly framed on the intersection between the top/right third of the grid in the photo shown above.
Don't forget to play around with the composition and find the most suitable perspective—get creative!
