What looks like the cover of a fantasy novel is a real setting just an hour drive north of San Francisco. Be mesmerized as fast-moving fog dances over majestic rolling hills.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Late afternoon, Sunset
There isn't a bad month to visit Mt Tamalpais, but you're most likely to capture the hills covered in blankets of fog during the summer months (June-August); however, Bay Area fog can sporadically appear during any month of the year if you're lucky!
Late-afternoon through sunset is the best time to capture California's famous golden light, which kisses the landscape and accentuates the surrounding hills and layers of fog.

Field tips

Please exercise caution while parking and exiting your vehicle along this narrow mountain road.
I used a medium telephoto 70-200mm lens to zoom in and capture a tight crop (130mm) of the hills, which helped to further dramatize the scene. Telephoto lenses make distant subjects appear closer to the camera.
Don't leave too early! The light and fog are constantly changing here, so what you capture one moment can look drastically different just minutes later.

Do nearby

If you're exiting the park east towards the city of Mill Valley then you must eat at Sol Food for lunch or dinner — the best Puerto Rican food! There's also an organic grocery store in Mill Valley called Good Earth, which serves amazing prepared foods as well.
