Monarch Beach Point Overlook

The image was taken on a cliff above Monarch Beach, looking west onto the Pacific Ocean. To get to this location, I recommend driving and then parking in the Salt Creek Beach parking lot (33.477176, -117.719191). Exit the parking lot on foot and cross over Ritz Carlton Dr. When you reach the "Under the Sea Art," take a right. Head west and then take the first left. Follow the path until you reach the GPS coordinates of where I stood to take the image.

Because of southern California's mild weather year round, you can find similar conditions at Monarch Beach any month.

At sunset, you'll get the dreamy golden light glowing off of the ocean water and sand. I like to visit when there are some clouds in the sky so I have a better chance for colorful clouds at sunset. I also try to go when there's a swell in the water so I can capture some big waves rolling in to the shore.

You can either use a wide-angle lens or a telephoto lens here. I used a 17mm focal length, but if you used something more narrow you could zoom in on the surfers in the water and still get a really interesting shot!

Try to frame some of the vibrant flowers in the foreground of your image. It makes for a aesthetically pleasing composition.

Try using the rule of thirds at this location by balancing the foreground, ocean and sky in your frame — and make sure your horizon is straight!

While walking down the ramp towards the beach, there will be a large grass area on your right. It's a great spot for a picnic!
