A natural gradient of blue mountains leads to an awe-inspiring view of snowy Mount Baker, rising high above the North Cascades. This location is accessible only by a multi-day trek along the Ptarmigan Traverse, the oldest and most famous alpine climbing route in the Pacific Northwest. This unique experience includes glacier travel, technical terrain crossings, and route finding and navigation across rugged terrain and remote wilderness. While we can only recommend this location for experienced trekkers, fortune favors the bold, and those up for the challenge will be rewarded with this spectacular sight!

This photo of Mount Baker and North Cascade mountains was taken near Sentinel Peak along the Ptarmigan Traverse, an alpine climbing trail, in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. This is a multi-day trek through remote terrain, only recommended for experienced trekkers. Please follow all common sense safety precautions and prepare appropriately for your trip in advance. Check in advance to ensure the trailhead is open and accessible, as well.
From the Cascade Pass Trailhead parking area (48.475493, -121.075162), navigate to the trailhead, on the east end of the loop in the road. Hike to Cascade Pass, and then start your cross-country route toward Cache Col. En route to Cache Col, you'll be required to cross an active glacier, which will require requisite experience and gear. Once you reach Cache Col, travel south along the traditional Ptarmigan Traverse route until you reach the area near Sentinel Peak, which is a location commonly between day 2 and day 3 camps.
When you reach Sentinel Peak, to achieve the perspective in my photograph, stand at the point referenced in the GPS coordinates and face northwest towards Mount Baker.
Driving directions from Marblemount, WA:
- Drive 23 miles east along Cascade River Road until you reach the end, the Cascade Pass Trailhead (48.475493, -121.075162)
