When to go
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
December to April is ideal for capturing the Ammatara Pura Pool steps at their finest. The dry season provides bright, natural light that highlights the pool’s sparkling blues and lush green surroundings. Early mornings or after a brief rain shower are particularly magical, as the tropical foliage looks its freshest.
The monsoon season (October to November), when I visited, offered a more dramatic feel to my photos.
Photograph the pool in the early morning for soft, diffused light that brings out the subtle textures of the stone steps and the clarity of the water. Late afternoon golden hour creates warm, glowing tones that enhance the earthy textures and give a dreamy vibe to your shots.
Field tips
Focus on the Subject: Incorporate a model stepping into the pool to add a dynamic and relatable element.
Play with Reflections: Capture the pool’s reflections of palm trees and the sky for a layered, immersive shot.
Highlight Textures: Emphasize the textures of the stone steps and tiles by shooting at an angle that showcases depth.
Use Leading Lines: The lines of the pool’s edges guide the viewer’s eye into the inviting water, perfect for storytelling compositions.
Shoot Underwater Details: If you have waterproof equipment, capture the transition where the steps meet the shimmering water for a unique perspective.
