Al Zubara Fort

avatar
@howfarfromhome
Originally built by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani in 1938 to serve as a Coast Guard station, this fort has since been renovated into a museum to display diverse exhibits and artworks — most especially for contemporarily topical archaeological findings. The fort’s reddish-orange walls are a great contrast to the normally blue skies and it serves as an excellent background for some interesting lifestyle or portrait shots.

This image was taken on the southeast corner along the exterior of Al Zubara Fort. The fort is situated about 105 km/65 miles from Doha, which is the capital of Qatar. Once you arrive at the Al Zubarah Parking Lot (25.976241, 51.045301), you'll see the fort ahead of you. Walk to the southeast side of the building and position yourself directly in front of the flag pole to get this perspective.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can photograph the fort any month of year, but Qatar can have extreme heat in the summer and it can be almost impossible to stand outside and photograph. We recommend photographing the Al Zubara Fort in the winter months (Jan-April and Nov-Dec) so you can take the photo without the unbearable heat.
The fort is impressive to photograph anytime of day, although to find similar lighting conditions, we suggest the morning, midday or late afternoon. During sunset, the rich color of the fort will be enhanced, so try visiting around then, too.

Field tips

We feel that having a model in the shot shows the scale next to the fort.
It also helps to have the model match their clothing with the fort. Color matching is often a nice creative touch, so if the model can wear oranges and reds, it'll make the photo pop.
Try and wait for the flag to blow in the wind. It'll bring some dimension to the still image, which will also add to energy to the overall feel of the photo.
In post processing, we suggest editing with our "Wanderlust Collection” presets to achieve this same color grade.
