The trek to Mount Brown Hut is a rewarding challenge for those seeking solitude and scenic beauty.
From the town of Hokitika, drive northeast on State Highway 6 for approximately 30 minutes until you reach Kokatahi. Here, you will find the trailhead, marked for Mount Brown. The hike to the hut is a steep 2-3 hour ascent through dense West Coast rainforest.
The path is well-maintained, with markers guiding the way through the bush and up into the alpine zone where the hut sits. It’s a true trampers’ track, often muddy and requiring a good level of fitness, but the reward is unparalleled vistas and a cozy retreat amidst the mountains.
Be sure to check the weather beforehand as flooding can cause the river to be too high to cross.
Note: the hike is accessible at any time, but the hut is first come first served as there are only four bunks available.
