The trek to Lake Matheson is as beautiful as the lake itself. Before capturing mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman at the lake, have your camera handy to photograph the paradise-like forests of Te Ara Kairaumati Walk.

This photo was taken on Te Ara Kairaumati Walk trek to Lake Matheson. The lake is located 3 miles from the town of Fox Glacier and 17 miles from Franz Josef. You can get to the start of the trailhead by car and park your car for free.
From Fox Glacier (5 minutes):
Take Cook Flat Rd and turn right to Lake Matheson Rd.
From Franz Josef (30 minutes):
Take State Hwy 6 and turn to Cook Flat Rd and Lake Matheson Rd.
You will see the trail right next to the parking lot. It's an easy loop and can be walked by every type of traveler; no need to be an advanced hiker. It leads around the shore of the lake, and the elevation change is minimal.
As you walk, you will see both well-maintained paths and wooden boardwalks. I took this photo when I reached the wooden paths.
