This image is of the historic brownstones at the intersection of Clark and Willow Street in Brooklyn Heights. The townhouse is on the southeast corner of the intersection. I stood across the street to capture this viewpoint.
By subway:
- Closest Station: Clark Street (train 2,3)
- Turn left on Clark Street until you arrive at the Willow St intersection
Tips
When to go
Best season
May, June, July, August, September, October
Best time
Late afternoon
The summer and autumn months are best times to go to capture the lush green trees and bushes along the street. At other times, the foliage will be bare and won't offer the same color contrast against the bricks.
Afternoon light is best as the sun will be facing the building, illuminating it best. I don't recommend going in the early morning because the sunlight will cast a dark shadow on the building.
Field tips
I stood on the pavement to get the shot, but be careful of traffic and stay aware of the direction in which the cars travel if you choose to stand in the street.
Allow yourself extra space at the top half of your photo for vertical correction in post-processing, as it's a bit tricky to choose the right angle. Experiment to find what works best for you!
Be patient and wait for an interesting subject to enter the frame. It’ll add a nice human element to your photo.

Do nearby
Brooklyn Heights promenade is one block west. I highly recommend walking down along the promenade for great shots of Lower Manhattan and the East River.
Walk south to Joralemon Street and make a right towards the waterfront. At Willow and Joralemon, you will find some very picturesque brownstones to photograph.
The waterfront is a great walk. Walk north along the water towards the Brooklyn Bridge for even more great spots.
