Shaka Nehan (Nirvana statue of Buddha) Temple Walls

avatar
@tokiokid
This statue of the reclining Buddha at Nanzoin Temple is considered to be the largest bronze statue in the world. The juxtaposition of the statue's sheer size and intricate detail is mesmerizing, and when you see it up close, you will feel humbled by its grandeur. The bumps on the head, called "rahots," are part of the details that can be seen up close. There are 686 of them in total. The largest one is 30 cm in both diameter and height, and weighs a massive 30 kilograms.

I took this photo outside the temple walls of the Reclining Buddha statue in Nanzoin. To get to Nanzoin, take the JR Fukuhoku Yutaka Line (Sasaguri Line) from JR Hakata Station to Kido Nanzoin-mae Station (20 minutes by rapid train from Hakata Station). It is a 3-minute walk from the station exit to the Nanzoin entrance. The Nirvana statue can be reached from the main hall through the Seven Lucky Gods Tunnel. This photo is taken outside the temple walls, where the top of the head can be seen over the rooftop.
