Considered to be the largest Buddha statue in the world, this bronze masterpiece is humbling for many reasons, but sheer size is certainly one of them. Among the intricate details of the statue, the mysterious patterns on the soles of its feet have been carved directly into the stone. Each one has its own meaning and represents his precious teachings and inspiring compassion.

I took this at the feet of Shaka Nehan, the Reclining Buddha statue in Nanzoin.
To get to Nanzoin, take the JR Fukuhoku Yutaka Line (Sasaguri Line) from JR Hakata Station to Kido Nanzoin-mae Station (20 minutes by rapid train from Hakata Station).
It is a 3-minute walk from the station exit to the Nanzoin entrance.
The Nirvana statue can be reached from the main hall through the Seven Lucky Gods Tunnel. This photo was taken at the end of the statue, from the feet looking up toward the head.
