How to get there

This image was taken with a drone, overlooking the cement along the west side of High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung. To get there, I recommend starting at Sai Kung city center and then taking a taxi to the High Island Reservoir. You can reference the GPS for the exact location of where I stood to take off my drone, but you'll be able to get a familiar viewpoint from taking off anywhere around the High Island Reservoir. Because this is a popular spot to take photos, there will be return taxis that wait at the top of the dam.

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can visit the High Island Reservoir East Dam any month of the year — as long as the weather is pleasant and it's sunny.
I recommend going to this spot during the day when it's well lit. Make sure you're not the last one there, as it can be difficult to head back into the city with fewer taxis waiting around.

Field tips

Before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements. While flying, make sure you're aware of other drones and always take off and land away from the crowds.
The dam can get very hot and does not have any coverage from the sun. I recommend wearing sunscreen and dressing appropriately so you don't get sunburned.
To combat the heat and add a pop of color, incorporate an umbrella into your shot. Your model can either stand and hold the umbrella or lay down and position the umbrella overhead.
Use the geometric shapes as a grid to position your model. The shape of the reservoir will guide your composition.

If you're feeling adventurous, there's a great hiking trail about 15 minutes from the reservoir. Take in the scenes as you walk the 10km MacLehose Trail.
