This photo of Lulumahu Falls was taken at the base of the waterfall, standing directly below the main pond. A permit is required to reach these waterfalls. Police have been known to hand out citaitons to hikers who do not have a permit. The permit prevents overcrowding on the trail. To obtain and print a permit online, visit the Hawaii Division of Forestry & Wildlife Trails website here: https://trails.ehawaii.gov/camping/welcome.html;jsessionid=376A214B7C00F4833B16AB1264A37920.lana Please be extra mindful and help keep Lulumahu Falls trash free! After enjoying the falls, be sure to leave with everything you came with. Unfortunately, many visitors leave behind plastic water bottles and bags. If you decide to remove your shoes and socks to enter the waterfall, don’t forget those either. To reach the falls, park in the dirt parking lot on the south side of Pali Highway, directly past Nuuanu Pali Drive ((21.353893, -157.811262). From here, there is a dirt path off the parking lot, where you'll see locked fence with the large hole cut in it through entrance. This is the trailhead. Follow the trail — it is clearly defined with pink ribbons as you go. The trail will take you through a bamboo forest, and then up alongside the river until you've reached the waterfall. The total length of the trail is 1.7 miles out and back and it takes about 30-45 minutes to hike to the waterfall. Once at the waterfall, I positioned myself directly in front of the falls below the shallow pool at its base, so I could capture the rocks in the foreground. Then, I pointed my camera up towards the top of the waterfall. Directions from Waikiki: - Take the Pali Hwy (61 N) towards Kailua - Parking lot is directly past Nuuanu Pali Drive
