Hanauma Bay & Koko Head

avatar
@mattaleong
From up above, you're able to capture an amazing view of one of Oahu's best snorkeling bays with one of the island's most popular landmarks as your backdrop. What I love most about this location is that you can walk the entire ridge to get a good workout or you can stop along the trail and watch the sunrise overlooking the bay. Either way, you'll encounter sunrise, panoramic views of the tropical landscape. (before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements)

This drone image was taken looking north onto Hanauma Bay and Koko Head. I stood at the top of the ridge on the Hanauma Bay Ridge Hike to take off my drone. I also went to the GPS coordinates and did a vertical panorama shot of the view and stitched it together in Lightroom. If you're coming from Honolulu, drive along H1 East Bound towards the town of Hawaii Kai until you hit Kalaniana'ole Highway. From Kalaniana'ole Highway, you'll park at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Commercial Parking (21.272969, -157.696845) or Hanauma Bay Parking (21.273914, -157.694298). After parking, walk north toward Kalaniana'ole Highway and then head south to walk up the road to the mountain. Once you hit a little ditch opening on the right hand side after walking a minute or two up, you'll see a little dirt pathway between some leaves. Hop over the ditch and start walking and following the path up the side of the mountain. As you begin your journey, reference the GPS coordinates and they'll lead you in the right direction. You'll then see a sign as you get higher up that will connect you to a paved road leading up the mountain. Once you're there you've reached the start of the hike! As you walk along the trail, you'll start to see Hanauma Bay to the left. At the top of the hill, you can either take off your drone from the top and fly your drone to the GPS coordinates listed or you can hike to the GPS coordinates and take off from there.
