Kabelsteg Bridge view of St Luke's Church

Along the Isar River, you'll come across beautiful park views that make you feel like you're in a remote forest from a time long ago — even though you're in the heart of modern-day Munich. From this vantage point, you'll have a clear view of a 19th-century landmark Protestant church. Capture the roman and neo-gothic architecture, framed by lush trees surrounding the bridge.

I took this photo standing at the southeast end of the Kabelsteg Bridge, looking west toward St Luke's Church. To get this view, position yourself just before the start/finish of the bridge so you can capture the lampposts in your shot. By public transportation: - Closest station: Gasteig (via 17 or N17) - Head southwest on Innere Wiener Straße toward Stubenvollstraße - Turn right onto Preysingstraße - Turn left onto Am Gasteig - Turn right at Rosenheimer Str. - Turn left toward Zellstraße - Slight right onto Zellstraße - Turn right to stay on Zellstraße and the bridge will be to your left

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
The Kabelsteg Bridge is beautiful during any month, but to capture the orange leaves and chestnuts (like I have in my photo), I recommend visiting in the autumn months. During these months, the Kabelsteg gets this wonderful moody touch and it's also less crowded by pedestrians. In the winter, I can assure you that the Kabelsteg looks like a fairytale when it's snowing!
For similar conditions, visit the bridge in the morning when the Kabelsteg is less busy. During late morning and afternoon, you'll get a moody composition that looks even better on a foggy, sunless day. For the summer, visit during sunrise and sunset to capture beautiful warm light.

Field tips

Be patient. If you don't have your own model, eventually someone will walk by and you can use them as your subject. In my case, I got lucky with an umbrella-holding dog walker and I was able to capture both the person and the dog walking in the rain.
Try kneeling down to capture the leaves on the ground. Having the leaves in the foreground of your shot will produce a more autumnal image.
I think that the lampposts can spoil the photo because they are so large, but instead of cropping the image, I decided to have them in my composition.
People passing by might ask you "Was mach‘n Sie‘n do?“ which means "What are you doing here?". Tell them that you love this bridge so much and want to capture it so that you can show your friends back at home that Munich is a beautiful city!

Do nearby

In the summertime, bring your swimsuit and enjoy a swim in the Isar River. I also recommend having a picnic by the riverside if the weather is nice!
Check out the famous Eisbachwelle, which is a manmade surfing wave, as well as the well-known Prinzregentenstrasse avenue. Both are within walking distance of the bridge.
