Rathewalde Village & Rathewalder Mühle Restaurant

avatar
@ericreinheart
This small, idyllic village was once a ghost town — but with a recent renovation, it's been transformed into the perfect getaway for locals and travelers alike. Whether you're visiting in the winter, spring, summer or fall, all seasons offer a picturesque glimpse into the charming life of Rathewalde residents. (before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements)

How to get there

This drone image was taken facing north above the small village of Rathewalde, with a view of the houses and Rathewalder Mühle restaurant. The best way to reach this location is to park at the Parkplatz Rathewalde (50.982276, 14.074823), which costs €0,50 every 30 minutes. Once you've parked, reference the GPS and walk a short seven-minutes south to get to the village. The GPS signals can be pretty bad around the village, so if you can't get a signal, you can launch your drone closer to the parking lot — just make sure to fly your drone as high as you can (~5m) to get the entirety of the village in your shot.

Tips

When to go

Best season

January, February, December

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
This aerial view of the Rathewalde village and Rathewalder Mühle restaurant is best captured during the winter months when you can find snowy conditions, like I have in my photo.
Visit the village during the day for the best natural light.

Field tips

Follow local drone regulations and permit requirements. In Germany, you're required to have insurance and an address on your drone if it weighs more than 250g (approx. 0.5 lbs).
I recommend flying your drone as high as possible to get a better signal as you fly over the village.
Place a model on the terrace to add a sense of scale to your image. The surrounding boulders will appear even bigger when compared to the small size of your model down below in the village center.
Don't be afraid to experiment with your angles! Try using the rocks on the side as a tool to frame your photo.
