Neue Kirche & Konzerthaus Statue from Gendarmenmarkt

avatar
@karstenkoehn
After having been destroyed in World War II, Gendarmenmarkt was restored to preserve the landmark buildings of churches, concert halls and monumental statues. Capture one of the 18th-century German cathedrals from this view of the concert hall steps as the sun sets over the square.

The image of Neue Kirche and the Konzerthaus steps was taken facing south in Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. To get this view, head to the stairs of the large central building (Schauspielhaus) in Gendarmenmarkt. From there, you'll see the lion statue and steps to your left, just outside of the Konzerthaus. Stand slightly to the left of the lion statue so the view of Neue Kirche is directly ahead of you. By subway: - Closest station: Bhf Hausvogteiplatz (via U2 line) - Head west on Taubenstraße - Turn right on Markgrafenstraße and the destination will be on your left

When to go

Best season

Best time

Sunset
You can capture a similar view of Neue Kirche during any time of the year. I think the best months are during the summer season, when the sunsets produce a warm glow that's cast across the square. If you're looking for a more moody image, visit during the winter months.
Photograph the church during sunset for similar lighting conditions. I would also recommend to come here really early in the morning since this place can get crowded during the day.

Field tips

Make sure to check if there are any events planned here as this square tends to host anything from demonstrations to open air concerts.
Get creative! Walk around the square and try to get some new angles. Incorporate something, like a statue or building, in the foreground to add and create depth to your shot.
Try too add people in your frame for a sense of scale.
The ground tiles will lead toward the building and at a low angle, you can create some nice leading lines as well.

Do nearby

Check out the beautiful square and the concert hall for more stunning photo opportunities.
I recommend visiting the nearby Bebelplatz, which is a square that consists of an opera house and a beautiful church that's widely remembered for the famous Nazi book burning campaign in 1933.
Head to Unter den Linden. This boulevard is often compared to the Champs-Élysées and is filled with old, beautiful architecture and retail shops.
