City Point-Center view of Rainbow Building Façade

avatar
@konaction
After the war, much of the architecture in east Berlin was dull and lifeless, so the city revitalized the area by adding designs and murals to bring an unexpected vibrancy to the monochrome buildings. This block is one of the most Instragrammable locations, but there are still endless ways to make it unique. Grab your camera (or even your phone!) and start snapping away.

This image of the split rainbow was taken along Weißenseer Weg inside the City Point Center shopping mall in Berlin, looking southeast onto the residential buildings. To get this perspective, enter the shopping mall and take the elevators up to the medical practice offices. The medical practice offices are private, but if you're respectful, you can photograph from the windows. Another option is to photograph outside on the sidewalk directly in front of the City Point Center (52.526776, 13.479065). You'll have a slightly angled view, but you can still achieve a great shot. By Light Rail: - Roederplatz Berlin (via M4, M5, M8 or M10 lines) - Head east towards the City Point-Center Address: City Point-Center, Paul-Junius-Straße 70, 10369 Berlin, Germany

Tips

When to go

Best season

March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
To incorporate the green trees, like I have in my image, photogtraph the spilt rainbow residential buildings during the spring, summer or early fall months.
Although you might be able to find similar conditions in the morning, it's best to visit the building during midday or in the late afternoon. Before midday, you'll be shooting towards the sun and the lighting can be too harsh if it's sunny.

Field tips

I recommend using a telephoto lens (70mm) so you can focus on the architecture and rainbow of the building.
To add a sense of flair to your composition, wait for birds to fly by between the two buildings. You can also incorporate people in the foreground and use the rainbows as a backdrop.
If you choose to take the image from the sidewalk instead of inside the shopping mall, attempt to keep your camera as straight as possible so your image doesn't appear at an angle.

Do nearby

I suggest following the rainbow design around the entire block since it covers all sides of the building.
I also highly recommend visiting the nearby Dong Xuan Center where you can find amazing and authentic Vietnamese food. They also offer cheap shopping if you'd like to shop.
