Zhuyuan Greenland park view of Snowball Viburnum Flowers

This photo of a model against a wall of white flowers was taken in Zhuyuan Greenland park in the Pudong neighborhood of Shanghai. To get here, take Line 6 to Pudian Rd Station. Exit the station and head north on Dongfang Rd. Make a right on Pudian Rd, and then enter Zhuyuan Greenland and navigate to the point referenced on the GPS coordinates.

I recommend photographing this location in the warm spring months between April and May. This is when the snowball virnum flowers bloom, and you'll also have a better chance of lush green foliage in the park.

The best time to visit Zhuyuan Greeland park is during the daytime, between morning and afternoon, when the sun will provide enough light to showcase the beautiful white flowers.

To create visual interest in your photo, try adding a model! I recommend dressing your subject in a strong, monochromatic color to either have them blend in or contrast against the backdrop. The solid black of the model's outfit helps the white flowers pop.

When composing your photo, use the rule of thirds — dividing your frame into equal thirds, and placing your subject along these lines will help form a more balanced and aesthetically-pleasing photo.

I suggest experimenting with color and saturation when editing in post. I chose to desaturate and darken the greens in my photo to keep the focus on the white flowers.

Central Park is another nearby city park in the neighborhood, one of the largest in Shanghai. The 140-hectare green space is chock-full of landscaped gardens, sculptures, fountains, a bamboo forest and a beautiful lake. There's even a 9-hole golf course! With hundreds of species of blooming flowers in the park, there's a multitude of colorful photo backdrops just waiting to be discovered.
