The Ellmauer Halt is the highest peak in the mountain massif of the Wilder Kaiser in the Austrian state of Tyrol. One of my favorite things about this mountain, other than the breathtaking view of the Alps, is how sharp the peaks are — they create a fantastic sense of depth in photos.
Also, this location holds great importance in the history of alpinism. In 1977, climbers Kiene and Karl completed the first alpine UIAA grade VII climb in the Kaiser region, which opened up the UIAA grading scale for rock climbing. If you're a hiking enthusiast then this location is definitely for you!

This image was taken from the summit of Ellmauer Halt, looking west toward the sunset. There isn't too much space up there, so make sure to get stable footing and a good, clear view of the other peaks. Also, please be aware that this is an incredibly difficult hike. Only venture to this location if you're an experienced hiker.
From Wochenbrunner Alm where you'll park your car (1085 m, highest point) it's about a six hour hike to reach the summit. The normal route from the south (Gamsänger Steig) is a scramble (I-II) with fixed cables. There's some risk of stone fall, so don't forget to take a helmet.
After you've parked, reference the GPS coordinates in Google Maps and they'll lead you to the peaks.
The hike up to the summit is extremely steep and challenging. Please be careful as you reach the peak and try not to slip. Use a helmet to protect yourself and secure your gear and belongings so you feel secure on your way up the mountain.
By car:
- Heading from Wörgl or Kufstein on the B178 road, take the first exit to Ellmau
- Then, take the first exit at the roundabout
- Follow the road until you reach the Wochenbrunner Alm car park (47.541258, 12.319259)
