During my road trip around the country of Tunisia, I passed by the incredible Chott el Djerid. Amongst the empty, flat desert driving from Matmata to Tozeur Chott el Djerid I found the unexpected, and photogenic (even at midday), dried up salt lake. The symmetrically shaped, cracked and salted ground looked untouched — and it was! There were no other souls in sight for miles. It was a hidden gem in the middle of the desert that reminded me how important it is to road trip as often as possible in new destinations so you can see all that the country has to offer.

This image of the Chott el Djerid salt lake was taken just south of the P16 road, which is between Douz and Tozeur. The best way to access this location is by driving along P16 or C103 if you're coming from Gafsa.
Input the GPS coordinates into your maps (33.890348, 8.455585) and then follow the directions that lead to where I took this photo. You'll be able to park along P16 and then walk on the dried-up lake to photograph a similar perspective.
