Punggol Beach Rocks

This is a unique coastal retreat tucked away from the concrete jungles of the city. The black rocks contrast beautifully against the ocean and create a playground of framing possibilities.

How to get there

This location is on Punggol Beach. Take Punggol Rd down towards the beach and turn left onto the pathway, which is the Punggol Promenade Nature Walk. Continue down the path, pass the Go Cycling @ Punggol Jetty bike shop, and when you see the second set of benches, look right to see an opening down to the beach. That’s where I took the shot! I suggest exploring around from there and see which cluster of rocks work best for the frames you have in mind. By MRT: - Take exit “B” - Head southeast on Punggol Central toward Punggol Pl - Turn left on Punggol Rd - Slight right to stay on Punggol Rd - Turn left on walkway

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Late afternoon, Sunset
Punggol Beach is great to shoot every month of the year!
To maximize the visibility of the rocks you must go at low-tide, which is typically around morning and late-afternoon/sunset times! This varies depending on the year (so check the link below). That said, a moderate tide can also be nice as it makes the photograph appear less busy. With high tide you will not see any rocks, and possibly not even be able to walk on the beach! Avoid mid-day as it can get very hot and the waters might be over exposed from reflecting sunlight. http://www.nea.gov.sg/weather-climate/forecasts/tide-information http://www.weather.gov.sg/weather-astronomical-and-tidal-information-today/

Field tips

Don’t forget to check the times for low tide for max exposure of the rocks! At high tide you’ll just see ocean with no rocks.
Beware of the barnacles (they may cut your feet). There also tends to be sand flies so bring some DEET bug spray.
There are often lots of ships in the horizon. Try shooting at an angle to crop them out.
Energize your model to feel the ocean spirit!
