When to go
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Because Singapore's weather is mild year round, you can photograph the Peranakan Houses during any month. I took this photo in April and if you're here during that time, make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses to shield yourself from the strong sun.
In the morning, midday or late afternoon you'll find similar lighting conditions. The area was really quiet in the early morning when I visited and I had the street almost all to myself.
Field tips
Although I stood on the pathway off of the main road (Koon Seng Road), make sure to watch out for oncoming traffic.
I usually travel with a 24-70mm lens as it gives me the best versatility for different types of compositions. At this specific location, try using a focal length of 35mm to incorporate the whole scene in your shot.
Stand behind the trees so the leaves peak through the top of your frame.
Wait for a passerby to walk through your frame or bring along a model to add a human element to the photo. I also recommend having your model carry a prop, like an umbrella, for another pop of color.
