Pan Pacific Singapore Look Down

avatar
@mart.lindner
Leading lines, geometrical shapes and seemingly infinite levels to look down on make this unique vantage point an architectural paradise — as long as you're not afraid of heights! After riding up the towering glass elevator to the top floor, make sure to hold your camera tight. It's a long way down, but the view is well worth it!

How to get there

This image was taken on the top floor of the Pan Pacific Singapore hotel, looking down onto the floors below. Please note that this is a public space, but in order to get to this level on the elevator, you'll need your own key or ride the elevator with a guest you know staying there. If you don't have elevator access, consider contacting the hotel prior to going there to increase your chances of getting a ride to the top floors. By MRT: - Closest MRT station: Promenade (Downtown Line and Circle Line) - Take Exit A After leaving the MRT station, walk towards Pan Pacific Hotel passing by Centennial Tower and Millenia Tower. Once there, you can take either the hotel main entrance on ground floor or the side entrance on the elevated level. Pass by the reception or walk towards the elevators. There are two sets of elevators. The three ones close to the inner hall only go up to a floor number, which won't be sufficiently high enough if you want the crossing to be in your composition. Instead, I recommend taking the elevators across from the other two, which will go to the highest floors. They're located at the outer wall of the hotel and are easily accessible. You'll know you're in the right one if you're standing in a glass elevator on the exterior of the building. You'll want to get to the 32nd floor, but the floor level doesn't matter too much as long as you're above the crossing below you. If you want to include a model in the composition, you must get her/him to the exact level that the crossing is on. I believe it's on level 28, but I didn't get there myself, so your model might have to try out a few different levels before the find it. Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
The featured photograph, which was taken inside the Pan Pacific Hotel building, is not affected by the weather and can be photographed during any month.
For similar lighting conditions, visit during the day. I suggest going when the hotel is most busy as not to stand out photographing. This is usually the case in the morning for breakfast and in the early evening for returning guests and dinner.

Field tips

Please remember that you're in a hotel. Act accordingly and be friendly to anyone you pass.
You are only able to access the top floor if you have a key to one of the hotel rooms or ride the elevator with a guest you know. If you don't have elevator access, consider contacting the hotel prior to going there to increase your chances of getting a ride to the top floors.
Pay attention to how the walkways cross your frame and compose a balanced shot. Capturing someone on the walkway helps add scale — be patient until someone passes or have a friend help you out!
Use a high f/ value to focus on all of the details in your shot. You'll need to compensate with a higher ISO and/or a lower shutter speed.
Try not to run in there with a tripod in one hand and your camera in the other. Use the handrail to place your camera for extra stability.

The nearby Promenade area has some great architecture to explore.
Inside Millenia Tower, you can find a pumpkin art installation that makes from some interesting images.
Not too far away from the hotel, you can take the ferris wheel ride called the Singapore Flyer.
