When to go
Best time
Mid-day, Late afternoon
Every month of the year is good to photograph the Marina One Residence.
The featured photograph was taken in the late-afternoon although you can photograph this spot throughout the day.
In the morning, the light is the softest and you may get a slight gold tint reflecting off the structure from the sunlight creeping in.
Mid-day light creates significant contrast and shadows from the light directly above. If you’re lucky, the shadow will cover half the structure, giving a nice effect.
The sun sets just behind the west side of the building; you can capture amazing lighting just slightly before the sun dips behind the horizon.
Field tips
A permit is required if flying a drone weighing more than 7kg, within 5km of an airport/military base, or higher than 200 feet.
Fly your drone at a good spot with little to no magnetic interference. Since you are flying near the vicinity of commercial buildings it’s important to keep a clear line of sight when flying.
I prefer a direct look down of the residence because I feel it’s the best way to capture the curves of the structure. Try exploring different angles. Challenge yourself, surprise me. 😀
You might want to tilt the gimbal slightly upwards when composing your image because the distortion can accentuate the curves of the structure and make it more dynamic.
