Best time
Late afternoon, Sunset
All months of the year are great to photograph this location. October and November bring the haziest of skies, if that’s your style.
The light during late-afternoon and sunset beautifully reflect off the skyline and creates a reflection on the water – that sunset glow! The sunset gradients off buildings can make a huge difference to your cityscape photography. Avoid mid-day because it’s more likely your highlights will blow out. I suggest visiting on a weekday to avoid the flood of tourists.
Field tips
A wide-angle lens (14mm) helps create a dramatic effect to the image by stretching the sky and pond of lily pads.
To maximize the amount of lily pads in my composition I stood very low and placed my camera right above the water.
Be patient and wait until there aren’t many people walking in your view.
It’s difficult to effectively expose this many elements in an image, so I used the bracketing technique (combined two shots at different exposures). To capture the texture of the clouds I shot at a low exposure, but this resulted in the skyline and lily pads not being well lit. So, I took a second shot at a higher exposure, and combined the images. It’s about finding that middle ground!
