Since it was built in 1909, the Neist Point Lighthouse has attracted visitors from all around the world. The rugged coastline looks onto the single structure and from the cliffs, you can capture an incredible image of land, sea and air.

This image of the lighthouse was taken on the cliffs of Neist Point in Scotland. To get here, you'll need a car. Also, please note: the road on the way to Neist Point Lighthouse is very thin and tight — be careful when you're driving on it. Follow the GPS coordinates to Neist Car Park (57.429722, -6.778828) and then walk south toward the lighthouse for a view of the cliffside. Reference the coordinates as you're walking and you'll reach the exact spot where I stood to get this south-facing shot.

Tips

When to go

Best season

May, June, July, August, September

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
I shot this in July and if you'd like to incorporate the green grass on the cliffs (like I did) then I recommend visiting in the summer months.
As long as it's overcast, you'll be able to find similar conditions during the day. Try to avoid sunny weather since it can create a lot of glare against the water.

Field tips

Weather is extremely unpredictable on the Isle of Skye. Make sure to check the conditions before visiting so you're not met with any surprises.
I used a 70mm lens so I could compress the scene and get a clearer image of the lighthouse.
Although I didn't direct them to stand there, there were people on the cliff that I wanted to feature to create a sense of scale. It's a popular destination so when you visit, the chances are high that other people will be there and you can include them in your shot, too.
This viewpoint is one of my favorites, but the entire cliff is photogenic. Spend time walking around and finding your preferred angle — the options are endless!
