Moke Lake

avatar
@joannehollings
Moke Lake, a hidden gem cradled in the arms of the Queenstown backcountry in New Zealand, is a sight to behold. As you stand at the water's edge, the lake mirrors the grandeur of the surrounding mountains, a spectacle of nature's artistry. It's a place where the silence is musical, and the landscape seems untouched by time. Imagine the soft hum of the wind, the golden hour bathing the peaks in a warm glow, and the sense of solitude that accompanies the sheer beauty of the place. It's not just a location; it's an experience, a canvas where the earth reveals its wild heart.

To reach the picturesque vistas of Moke Lake from above, begin your journey at the Moke Lake Loop Track. Embark upon the trail, skirting the lake's edge, where the path meanders gently and the water laps quietly at the shore. Continue along, and soon you'll encounter a rustic farmer's fence; this will be your silent guide. Follow the fence as it veers to the right, becoming your companion for the next 400 meters. As the fence makes its departure to the right, stay with it. You'll notice a gradual shift in the landscape as the lake begins to recede behind you. Keep an eye out for a subtle path diverging up the peak to your left; this marks your climb. Take this path, adhering to its course as it ascends. The hike is a steady 45-minute climb, but your efforts will be amply rewarded. At the crest, you'll be greeted by a tranquil clearing. Here, pause and set up your equipment. Before you stretches a panoramic canvas — an ideal spot to capture the breathtaking beauty of Moke Lake from an elevated perspective.
