I took this photo on the first floor of the Brooklyn Museum inside the Great Hall. Once you enter the museum, you'll turn right and head straight till you see the Great Hall. I stood in the corner of the entrance of the Great Hall for this shot. Reference the GPS coordinate in satellite mode for reference.
By Subway:
- Closest Station: Eastern Parkway Brooklyn Museum (2, 3, or 4 Trains)
- The museum will be directly south from the station
Tips
When to go
Best season
All months
Best time
Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can take the photo year round because the museum is indoors and unaffected by the seasons.
The room is brightest during mid-day or late-afternoon when the sun shines brightly over the skylit roof filling the room with soft, even light.
Visit the museum on a weekday when it's not as busy. During the weekend, the museum can be much more crowded and this could change the look of your photo.
Field tips
It's especially important to use a wide-angle lens (24mm) for this photo! The room is massive, so you want to capture the entire Great Hall in your shot. A narrow lens will cut off some areas of the room.
To create a sense of symmetry position yourself in the corner of the room.
If you're going for an empty room feel, remain patient until the space clears out.
