Bench outside West Elm view of Brooklyn Bridge & Manhattan

On a quiet, gloomy day, capture this serene image in the heart of Brooklyn. This vantage point offers a view of one of most popular shopping areas, as well as an iconic bridge and foggy Manhattan skyline.

This image was taken along the waterfront benches next to the intersection of Plymouth St and Main St in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Once you get to the intersection, make a left so you're facing the Brooklyn Bridge. The benches will be right in front of you. By subway: - Closest Station: York Street (F Train) - Head north on Jay St - Turn left on Plymouth St and head west until you get to Main St

Tips

When to go

Best season

January, February, March, November, December

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
To capture a gloomy winter's day like I have in my photo, I recommend visiting in the winter.
From this spot, the sun rises behind you so the morning light illuminates the area with a softening glow. There will also be less people in the morning -- perfect for a peaceful shot! That said, as long as there's daylight, you'll be able to get the shot. For an extra-gloomy day, go right after a snowfall or rainstorm. It will bring a certain darkness to the image, similar to what I have in the featured photo.

Field tips

I stood in line with the bench, but try playing around with the angle. You can get a lot of different perspectives with the bench, bridge and store front. Even Jane's Carousel in front and to the right of you.
To emphasize the leading lines of the bench, stand at a higher angle.
Be patient and wait for something interesting to cross into your frame.

Do nearby

Downtown Brooklyn is filled with things to do! Shop around the area or grab a bite to eat at one of the waterfront restaurants. It's a hip and trendy area, without the massive crowds of tourists you'll find in Manhattan.
One of my favorite places in the area is Shake Shack. They have the best burgers!
