The Griswold-Larned Parking Garage's Rooftop view of The Guardian Building & Buhl Building

This image is of the exterior of the Guardian Building and the Buhl Building, which are both iconic landmarks of the city of Detroit. I stood on the rooftop of The Griswold-Larned Parking Garage, facing northeast for this photograph. All months of the year are suitable to photograph the Guardian Building and the Buhl Building, but if you visit during the winter the weather will be less enjoyable.

Morning, midday, late afternoon and sunset all give you similar lighting conditions at this location. These times of the day will provide enough light to accentuate the colors and textures of the exteriors. If it's too dark, the buildings will lose their pop of color.

By using a wide-angle lens (23mm), I was able to frame the façade of both skyscrapers in the frame.

The rooftop is fairly large, so walk around and experiment with different vantage points.

Try shooting both vertically and horizontally for very different feels to your image. It's always good to shoot a variety of images and to pick the best later.

You're right in the center of downtown Detroit. This area has a lot to offer the photographer — ranging from architecture and cityscape to street and lifestyle photography.

There are also many restaurants and bars nearby.
