While the elementary school may be permanently closed, its grounds still come alive with the explosion of color that erupts from the 100-year-old ginkgo tree in its schoolyard. The legendary tree is heralded for its fiery colors that light up the blue autumn skies.

This photo of the ginkgo tree was taken at the former Kyuhinouesho Primary School in Nichinan, Japan.
There are a number of ways to get there, but the best is to drive. Take route 180 from Okayama to Niimi City. Change to Route 8 for another 40-minute drive to Nichinan.
The former primary school is located on the banks of the Hino River, and the tree is at the center of the schoolyard. Reference the GPS coordinate for the exact spot I stood.
