Southwark Station Platform Transfer Stairs

These identical stairs are the perfect location for an industrial-style, mirrored image. The arches on either side complement each other with their exact symmetry and modern architecture.

This image was taken in the underground level of the Southwark Station. You can either take the Jubilee line or enter the Southwark Station from the ground level. Head toward the central transition area where the escalators are and then take the escalators toward the Jubilee line down to the lower level. Once you're on the lower level, you'll see a large set of steps going up to a half level. To the left and right you'll see the arches over the stairways — this is the middle transfer area to the subway lines. Both ends of the platforms are identical, but I recommend choosing an end with less people for a cleaner shot of the station.

When to go

Since the Southwark Station is indoors, you can get a similar shot year round.
You can visit anytime, as long as the station is open. My suggestion is to go just before the line closes so you don't have any people in your shot.

Field tips

Because the symmetry is so exact here, try to make sure you're framing everything correctly. Even if you're slightly to the left or right it will throw off your shot.
Although it appears large, this area is actually a tight space so you won't have much room to move back and frame the whole scene — that's why a wide-angle lens (16mm) will be helpful here.
Play around with the composition of this image. You can have models or photograph without anyone in your shot. The architecture is the real star here, so make sure to highlight its unique build.

Do nearby

You're close to the Tate Modern, which I definitely recommend checking out! They always have interesting exhibits and the top of museum (which is free of charge to access) has a nice vantage point of the River Thames.
