North Bank River Thames near Tower of London

Step back in time at this grim and gloomy riverside scene devoid of modern architecture (be leery of the fabled Werewolves of London lurking in the fog!).

The image was taken along the north bank of the River Thames, just outside of the Tower of London. From Tower Bridge, you'll walk down the stairs and take a left to get to this spot. Otherwise, you can take public transportation. By London Underground: - Closest station: Tower Hill (via Circle or District) - Turn left toward St Katharine's Way - Turn right toward St Katharine's Way - Turn left onto St Katharine's Way - Turn right and the destination will be on your left

Tips

When to go

Best season

January, February, November, December

Best time

Sunrise, Morning
If you want the heavy fog like I have in my image, I recommend coming to the north bank November through February.
The fog rises from the river in the early morning, so try to come here around sunrise. There will also be less people at this time of day.

Field tips

Try to take a few shots without anyone in the frame and then wait for someone to walk through your image. Having different composition options will allow you to create your own unique photo.
I used a wide-angle lens (16mm), but you can also use a 70-200mm lens to achieve a nice compression.
Try to horizontally align your shot to ensure the lampposts don't appear slanted in your final image.
