Bloomberg Wooden Atrium

avatar

Designed by leading architect Lord Norman, this stunning building is not only beautiful, it's also one of the most sustainable in the world. And whilst the exterior is nice, the interior's swooping wooden walls create a vortex-like ceiling that's mesmerizing to the eye.

The image was taken from within the entrance atrium of Bloomberg's London Headquarters. The Bloomberg building is just southwest of the Bank Underground Station. Then, turn down a street called Bucklersbury where you'll find a courtyard. The entrance to the Bloomberg Offices is located on the south side of this courtyard and once you enter, the atrium will be on your right. This building is only open to the public during Open House weekend in London. It is advised to go as early as you can to avoid long queues. Check out their website for more information on Open House London: https://openhouselondon.open-city.org.uk/listings/7014. By London Underground: - Closest station: Bank (via Central, Northern or Waterloo & City line) - Walk west on Queen Victoria St towards Bucklersbury Address: Bloomberg, 3 Queen Victoria Street, London, EC4N 4TQ

Tips

When to go

Best season

September

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
The Bloomberg London Headquarters can only be photographed during Open House week in London, which is typically in September. Check online for more information: https://openhouselondon.org.uk/.
For a clean photo, visit this place in the morning as it fills up quickly during the Open House London event. You can also find similar conditions in the midday and late afternoon.

Field tips

Please note that tripods may not be allowed during Open House, so it's best to only bring your camera along.
Using a wide-angle lens (12mm) will allow you to capture the scale of this wooden atrium.
Try to get down low and shoot upward to capture the impressive ceiling.
Since this isn't the brightest room, rest the camera on the floor and use a longer shutter speed to get the area properly exposed.

Do nearby

I recommend checking out the nearby Coq d'Argent Restaurant, which offers free access to their rooftop bar with great views of the business district.
St Paul's Cathedral is just west of the Bloomberg London Headquarters. The stunning church sits on Ludgate Hill at the highest point in London and has been an integral part of the city's history — it was even the church where Lady Diana and Prince Charles got married.
