Shanghai No.1 Department Store Passageway

This image was taken on the passageway between the two buildings of the Shanghai Department Store No. 1. The passage way runs on three floors (3, 5, 7) and crosses Luhe Road. I took the featured shot on the 7th floor. Enter from either side and you'll get this view. All months of the year are suitable to photograph the Shanghai No.1 Department Store. During the winter months, I suggest having your model wear warmer clothes as the tunnel is situated outside.

Visit this place at sunset to capture the lights in the background for a warm golden glow without harsh lighting. As the sun goes down, the lights will come on and illuminate the passageway.

I recommend using a wide-angle lens (35mm) to incorporate as much of the tunnel's unique architecture as possible.

Although the passageway runs across three floors (3, 5, 7), I definitely recommend going to the 7th floor so you can have nothing but the arced windowed ceiling above you, instead of the other channels. You can also venture to the other floors for a different perspective.

Placing your model in the center of the passageway creates a sense of symmetry.

The illuminated passageway creates a futuristic effect, so try to incorporate it into your shot. I had my model dress accordingly with a unique set of glasses.

The mall not only has stores, it also has many restaurants. Enjoy the massive department store, walk around or have a bite to eat.
