The Cathedral Rock is a natural sandstone butte on the Sedona skyline—and the hike to it is one of my favorites in Sedona! The summit elevation of Cathedral Rock is 4,967 feet (1,514 m); it's a challenging hike indeed, but it rewards those ready for the adventure with incredible views and hidden gems.

This photo was taken at the end of Cathedral Rock, at the summit of a short but technical 1.2-mile hike from Cathedral Rock Trailhead in Sedona.
To get there by car, take Highway 179 until you reach Back O’ Beyond Road. Turn right into Back O’ Beyond Road and continue for about 0.6 miles until you reach the beginning of the trailhead, located at (34.8251749, -111.788540). You can park your car there and pay for the Red Rock Pass. It costs $5.
Once you're at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead, it will be a 1-2 hour hike depending on your fitness levels. The climb starts almost as soon as you hit the trail and involves scrambling up. Follow the large wire baskets of rocks that mark the trail. The trail is gradual until the bottom layer of Cathedral Rock, but it will get steeper. Get ready to use your hands to scramble up!
Even with the elevation and scrambling, there are no ledges or major drop-offs on the steeper part of the hike. The only place on this trail where you have any real exposure is at the end when you are standing on the saddle. But this saddle is wide enough; even if you have a fear of heights, it still should be fine.
You can tell your model to hike a bit more towards the right and you can stay on the saddle to capture a photo of them with the Cathedral Roc in view.
